Ki Divine Shares the Story Behind Her Spoken Word Journey

Ki Divine’s journey as an artist is rooted in healing, resilience, and purpose.. These days, through her spoken word projects, performances, and community initiatives, Ki Divine continues using her voice to help others embrace their own stories and healing journeys.

Tell us about the first time you shared your art with someone. What was their reaction, and how did it impact you?

Ki Divine: The first time I shared my poetry, I was young and didn’t speak much. I wasn’t sure if my voice mattered. My grandmother Mary loved my words so much she framed them. She pushed me to speak up and say my words in front of people. That moment changed everything for me. I realized poetry wasn’t just something I wrote it was something that could reach into another person’s heart and help them feel seen. It taught me that our stories have power and that vulnerability can create connection. My pieces come from ancient times.

What is a part of your journey that most people do not know but helped shape the artist you are today?

Ki Divine: Many people see the performer, but they don’t always see the healing journey behind the art. I am a veteran, a survivor, a mother, and a woman who has died and had to rebirth herself more than once. There were seasons of grief, anxiety, self-doubt, and searching for purpose. Poetry became a lifeline. Long before it became a career, it was medicine. Those private moments of healing shaped the artist people see today.

Before people knew your name, what sacrifices were you making to pursue your dream?

Ki Divine: I sacrificed my health, comfort, sleep, security, and certainty. I invested in my craft when there was no guarantee of a return. I drove long distances for performances, worked multiple hustles, funded my own projects, and poured countless hours into creating community spaces for artists. There were many moments when I was building something bigger than myself while battling Graves Disease anxiety depression and heart ache. I pushed while carrying responsibilities as a partner, mother, entrepreneur, and community leader. The sacrifices were real, but so was the vision.

Was there ever a time when you thought about giving up? What kept you moving forward?

Ki Divine: Absolutely, what kept me moving forward was remembering that my story wasn’t just for me. Every time someone told me that a poem helped them heal, find hope, or feel understood, I was reminded of my purpose. My art became bigger than my personal success. It became service. That responsibility kept me going. Seriously saved me.

What is something you have overcome that you are especially proud of today?

I am most proud of overcoming the belief that I had to shrink myself to be accepted. I thought I had to be like the other poets. Learning to fully embrace my voice, my spirituality, my creativity, and my purpose has been one of the greatest victories of my life. Today I stand unapologetically in who I am, and that freedom influences everything I create. I’m Not like these other poets!

What has been the biggest highlight of your career so far, and what made that moment so special?

One of the biggest highlights has been traveling the world to share my gift and meet my supporters in person. Watching Divine Sol Sundays grow into a thriving community. Seeing artists, healers, musicians, and creatives come together in a space built on authenticity, healing, and expression reminds me that the vision is working. Awards, stages, and recognition are beautiful, but witnessing lives transformed through community is what means the most to me.

Tell us about what you are currently promoting and what this project means to you personally.

Ki Divine: My latest project is I Am Legend Ep which includes Not Like These Other Poets, Aftermath/Brand New, Maather Nature/Empath, and I Am Legend. My focus this season is expanding the Ki Divine ecosystem through travel performances, Art of Spokenword workshops, media projects, Divine Sol Sundays, Freedom Fest, and new spoken word releases. These projects are extensions of my mission to create spaces where people feel empowered to tell their stories, honor their healing, and reconnect with their purpose. This work is deeply personal because it reflects my own journey of transformation.

If someone listens to your music for the first time tonight, what do you hope they learn about you as a person?

Ki Divine: When people listen to my spokenword music I hope they learn that I am human first. I hope they hear honesty, resilience, compassion, and courage. I hope they hear someone who has experienced life’s challenges and chosen healing instead of bitterness. Most of all, I hope they hear someone committed to helping others remember their own power.

What impact do you want your art to have on the people who experience it?

Ki Divine: I want people to leave feeling seen, inspired, and transformed. I want them to feel less alone. I want them to remember that their voice matters, their story matters, and their healing matters. If my art helps someone choose themselves, believe in themselves, or begin their healing journey, then I have accomplished my purpose.

If someone has never heard of you before, why should they become a fan of you?

Ki Divine: Because I offer more than entertainment. I offer an experience. My work lives at the intersection of spoken word poetry, healing, spirituality, music, storytelling, and community. If you are looking for art that speaks to the soul, challenges you to grow, and reminds you of your own power, then my work is for you. My mission is simple: to help people remember to be who they came here to be.
